February at Fillmore

We’ve had a great January at Fillmore Arts Center. Highlights included:

  • Sharing Performances for 3rd-5th graders;
  • A well-deserved pizza party for committed instrumental students; and,
  • A guest artist, Jessa Thurman, from the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History speaking on Insects.

The obligatory David Bowie reference aside, February brings new class assignments for younger students.  Visual arts teachers stay the same, but performing arts teachers have changed.

Also, 3rd-5th graders have started their new, second term classes.  FAC has also made some changes to the 3rd-5th grade choices for the five FAC schools.

  • Ms. Carpenter will now be teaching two sessions of Sculpture back to back;
  • Mr. Tabor will be teaching Keyboards for Marie Reed and Hyde, Guitar for Stoddert and Woodwinds for Key;
  • Ms. Strunk will now be teaching Mixed Media for all of her classes; and,
  • We have expanded Lego Animation to include Key as well as Hyde and Stoddert.

Be sure to ask your child what they’re doing at Fillmore, and who their new teachers are!

Coming Up!

We just can’t wait for February to get rolling. In February, FAC has planned several outstanding activities for students. A few of these are:

  • Visit to the Kennedy Center to see Oliviera, a Brazilian adaptation of the musical Oliver!, for students from Ross and Marie Reed;
  • Sugarfoots and Co. will perform African Folk tales for students in honor of Black History Month;
  • New art displays will go up at each school on Parent/Teacher Conference Day; and, on a scheduling note,
  • Tuesday February 23 – normally a Marie Reed day – has been designated a “switch day.”  FAC will run a Monday schedule on that day.

The First Day of Fillmore

Today went very well!  All students were welcomed out on the Fillmore “deck” by their teachers. Students were happily singing, dancing, playing music and making art all throughout the day.  Teachers from our member schools commented on the smooth organization and the Fillmore teachers agreed that the day was a huge success.

Our theme this year is “The Americas” and each Fillmore teacher will be highlighting this theme sometime during  the year with different classes.  Please feel free to contact Fillmore if you can contribute to our theme in any way.

Each school this year will be piloting a new course – more about this to follow.

We are looking forward to a banner year at Fillmore!  Please stop by for a visit!
